«Urban sensors will be the eyes of robots» (06/12/2016)

Vice Dean of the School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering Kyushu University |

Ryo Kuruzame, a professor at Kyushu University, one of the seven former imperial universities in Japan and the 126th in the world ranking, visited the Polytechnic of Cartagena, where he lectured on the 'Robot Town Project' , Which seeks the use of multiple sensors and robotic systems to assist people during their daily lives.

- How will robotics change our cities?

- Using sensors in public spaces.

Cameras, RFID identifiers, such as those that have stores to detect anti-theft chip, and other instruments to regulate traffic or control the energy consumption of buildings, for example.

The sensors are the eyes of robots.

- What kind of robots will we see in our cities?

- When talking about robots many people think only humanoids, but really the refrigerators are already very sophisticated robots.

And where we will most appreciate it will be in the autonomous cars, that can circulate without driver thanks to its own sensors but that also will receive data of the urban sensors.

- Will our sensors invade our privacy?

- It really is a serious problem.

I think there are fields where it is necessary to give away privacy, but it will depend on the service provided by the robots.

For example, when we are sick and go to a hospital, we accept that the toilets access our privacy, because we need their care.

The important thing is that we can decide if we give up our privacy.

- Social robotics is closely related to the care of the elderly.

How can you help them?

- Improving your mobility.

With exoskeletons or wheelchairs with sensors and GPS to program them.

- Are robots the answer to societies with more and more elderly living alone?

- Guaranteeing the care of a dependent person using robots is not yet possible, it is very complicated.

Current artificial intelligence is not enough.

- Will this technology be accessible or will it only be a luxury for the rich?

- It will happen as with the cars.

100 years ago they were very expensive and almost nobody could buy them.

Now almost everyone can get one.

The same will happen with the robots.
