The student of the School of Agronomists of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) Ana López Teruel has found insufficient material of damping in the parks of El Molinete, San Ginés de la Jara and Capitanes Ripoll.
"The impact damping material used is sand and gravel which has lost thickness, not complying with regulations.
It would be necessary to replenish these materials, "said the student.
The research of the student, a fellow of the Chair of Municipal Infrastructures of the City of Cartagena and UPCT, has analyzed the minimum conditions and qualities of safety that must comply with the parks according to European regulations in order to serve as the basis for a future ordinance municipal.
"These urban approaches should facilitate the development of playful and physical activities that enhance sociability, learning and fun, while avoiding risks that may harm health and physical integrity," says Professor Encarna Conesa, director of Work and the green infrastructure line of the Chair.
"We studied four parks in the city and observed that those built after 2010 did meet the requirements of European regulations, but we would have to review the state and adapt to the community requirements of the oldest," says the student recently graduated, Natural of Hellín (Albacete).
Among the studied parks, the one next to Capitanes Ripoll Street, installed in 2003, is the one that presents major deficiencies.
"The slides in this park do not have a top bar to keep children from standing up.
In addition, the damping surfaces are insufficient and are in very poor condition and do not cover enough space to cushion possible impacts in case of fall from a game equipment, "says the young student.
On the other hand, the study positively values "the maintenance and care of the four parks evaluated", emphasizing that "the urban furniture and the vegetation of the zone remain in optimal conditions".
