David Martinez Granados researcher has won the award for excellence in research in water economics for the best doctoral thesis 2016 awarded by the Department Aquae-UNED.
The thesis, which competed with 16 other candidates, entitled "water use in irrigation of the Segura basin. Evaluation of economic instruments for managing aquifers Economic valuation" and was held at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT ) under the direction of doctors Calatrava Leyva and Javier Martinez Victoriano Alvarez.
The thesis evaluates the economic impact of losses by evaporation of water in large reservoirs and small irrigation ponds Segura basin defined under different scenarios depending on water policy trends and predictions of climate change.
"The results highlight the need to take into account evaporation losses and the growing impact of climate change on water management as they have important hydrological and economic impacts.
Quantification of impacts allows more accurate the agricultural use of water and the implications of possible management alternatives, both the current situation and future economic valuation, "explains the author.
The research also analyzes the economic impact of different water management tools that can be used to eliminate overfishing in aquifers Guadalentín basin, with particular attention to the role it can play the new availability of desalinated water.
"In the current situation of availability of water resources, desalination would significantly relieve the pressure on groundwater resources but would not solve the problem of overfishing," adds the researcher.
The Aquae Chair of Economics water UNED aims to conduct research, transfer, dissemination, teaching and innovation on the water economy.
The award was presented in the center of the Pious Schools UNED of Madrid.
