Professor of Mathematics and Applied Statistics UPCT, Juan Medina, participated in the seminar on Digital Education organized by the Telefonica-UP Chair with a presentation on his career on the Internet under the title "Ten years teaching mathematics through videos" .
Medina recalled its beginnings in 2005 when it began to be distributed among students of Industrial teaching material on DVD or CD, to help them overcome their problems with math.
A proprietary web portal called LasMatemáticas.es a video channel on Youtube, a book and thousands of followers on their social networking profiles support the informative work of this teacher, who recently managed to reach 50 million visitors in its channel and a pioneer in Spain in the creation of massive online training courses.
Medina has made 50,000 others enroll in their last four math courses free on the Web through the Myriad platform.
The challenge now, as acknowledged by the teacher, is the competition: "boys seek and prove something else to pass it to learn, my videos are loaded with much substance and have the problem that compete with lighter that explain how to do things, but not knowing what you do ".
Professor cartagenera university does not accept changes in this regard: "I am clear that will always be so, which featured is a rigorous material, although some students do not see, I am a mathematician and university professor, I understand that you first learn and then Approve.
Now I try to take care of the aesthetics of the material, something that did not bother me so much before and do more participatory.
I think Youtube end up creating a social network so that not just a video repositories but that has a community where students participate and individually ".
In taking stock of his two decades of disclosure of mathematics, the teacher says his satisfaction for the work done have been daily, "when I record a video and see you see, when my students write to me, what really fills you up it is the heat that is following you and encourages you in your work. "
Juan Medina hopes in the future to "remain professor at my university, creating materials and improving it, always at the University because I believe that this is all part of my job."
UPCT initiatives in Digital Education
The Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Communications, Mathieu Kessler, explained at the conference on Digital Education initiatives launched by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena in this area.
On the one hand, they aim to offer teachers the necessary technological tools and, secondly, those to facilitate teaching students.
An example of the former is UPCTForma, which allows teachers to transform the content taught in a story through a digital platform.
Another example of achievements in digital education initiative Aula streaming, which allows students to access previously recorded classes, both the teacher's explanation as to the projected images during it.
All these initiatives have been launched through the Digital Production Center Contents of the Polytechnic of Cartagena.
