Functional syrups cartagenera company Martinez Nieto SA, which exports its brand Marnys more than 60 countries have doubled their lifespan between 24 and 36 months, thanks to the technique of homogenization by high pressure, evaluated in the laboratories of the UPCT during the doctoral thesis of pharmaceutical technical director of the company, Antonio González García.

"Extending the shelf life of these products is essential to reach distant markets where nutracéutios natural supplements are highly appreciated," explains co-director of the thesis, Perla Gómez di Marco.

The ultratecnificada plant Martínez Nieto, SA in Cartagena estate of Los Camachos produces 8,000 bottles when these syrups, intended for people suffering from cystitis, anemia, malnutrition or liver disease and are being exported with great success to different countries internationally.

"The doctoral research, funded by the Instituto de Fomento (INFO), evaluated the efficacy of homogenization by high pressures of 80 to 120 megapascals, analyzing functional, microbiological, sensory and physico-chemical quality," explains the director of the thesis, Encarna Aguayo.

"This technique allows a homogeneous microdispersion of different bioactive compounds that make up the product, giving physicochemical stability during storage.

Compared to classical pasteurisation, this technique reduces the time for industrial processing but requires a large investment in equipment, "he adds.

"What I value most is that the research effort has had immediate industrial application, which is reflected in growth for all," says the author of the thesis.

González García anticipates that the intention of the company is to continue collaborating with the UPCT microbiological decontamination techniques to process solid plant extracts.

The company is also interested in having expertise in industrial engineering and agricultural engineering student at the Polytechnic of Cartagena facing the expansion of its facilities and production are expected.
