A grid of longitudinal bars to the stream at the bottom of the channels is designed and tested by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) to capture flood flows without dragging large sediment solution.
The water filtered through the bars would be redirected towards rafts for its use, reducing the risk of flooding.
The thesis of Professor Juan García Bermejo, directed by Luis Castillo, head of the Laboratory of Hydraulics of the UPCT, studied in the channels of experimentation Polytechnic size, angle and space between the proposals bars to block solids more than 15 centimeters current without clogging.
"Similar systems capture background are widely used in high mountain rivers, in fact are called zip lines, Caucasian or Andean shots, but have not been used so far in semiarid basins like ours, where walls type dam or diversion dam used to derive the current "explains García Bermejo.
"The fence would prevent floods after large sediments accumulate in the weirs, already silted," the author of the research.
"The sediment washing for cleaning is unfeasible due to water scarcity," he adds.
The thesis has been carried out with the latest equipment for hydraulic studies UPCT, including an infrastructure for studying uptake systems in semi-arid areas, using high-speed cameras, gauges instantaneous velocity type doppler and pressure.
The laboratory, which received funding from the Seneca Foundation for construction and equipment, also has a sand trap with researchers continue the investigations to minimize silting.
The court judged unanimously proposed the thesis summa cum laude with honors cum laude and was made up of professors from the Polytechnic Universities of Madrid, Valencia, Cartagena and the Universities of Corunna and Castilla-La Mancha.
The research team led by Luis Castillo have had international repercussions, being included in the technical manual for the Federal Emergency Management Agency US and used for remodeling dams in Ecuador.
Demonstrating its academic recognition, Hydraulic Laboratory Network of Spain held in late June in the UPCT its annual seminar.
