Systems to optimize municipal services, to lower energy costs, to improve urban mobility in areas such as La Manga and Cabo de Palos, to provide solutions to the state of the vegetation of the city, regenerating soils or to predict episodes of extreme weather events .
Researchers UPCT involved in various research areas of the department of Municipal Infrastructure City of Cartagena UPCT presented this morning the mayor of Cartagena, Jose Lopez, and members of his government team intermediate results of their work.
and they are focused on optimizing the infrastructure of the municipality.
The research group led by José María Molina works in a system that will optimize all municipal services to gain efficiency.
"The idea is to turn the city into a smart city" summarizes the researcher who reported to have been evaluating telecommunications infrastructures of different municipal headquarters and the Palace Hall, the Auditorium The Batel, the Security Park, the Radio Link St. Julian or infrastructures buses to implement a geographic information system where on one screen municipal technicians can learn issues such as public lighting luminaires are functioning, if any damaged, the situation of each city bus status containers of the city, the ORA or water resources.
Meanwhile, the Group R & D Engineering and Transport Infrastructure, led by Pilar Jiménez, is designing a phased plan on sustainable urban mobility.
They have studied first the La Manga and Cabo de Palos, where they pose improve the flow of traffic and pedestrian mobility after noticing some problems.
Another line of research of this chair has to do with the regeneration of soils and revegetation of degraded areas, whose researchers are Jose Alvarez and Hector Conesa.
They aim to improve the soil with municipal waste landfill Gorguel.
The work focuses on improving soil and restoration with native species of ancient glass of municipal landfill of municipal solid waste Gorguel.
As part of the solution adopted within this project it is to use organic waste generated in the city itself and from the treatment plant wastes in the region of Cartagena as fertilizer at zero cost.
On vegetation and green infrastructure also they work Encarna Conesa and Jesus Ochoa Group R & D hortofloricultura Mediterranean.
They focus on adapted to our climatic conditions and landscape design green infrastructure.
They have already inventoried 40% of gardens, parks and green areas of the port city and have registered more than 2,000 trees.
During the study they have warned that trees like the Paseo de Alfonso XIII are in poor condition and assess the suitability species (Platanus Hispanica) in the area, proposing advanced solutions to phytosanitary problems detected.
For its part, the Research Group Water Resources Management, led by Sandra García Galiano, is focusing on identifying actions for forecasting, monitoring and extent of flooded areas and compliance in the municipality of Cartagena, such as the Mar Menor area, central urban area, and area of Cartagena.
As they have stated, they have found that there have been years when in the autumn months, that is, September, October and November, "has fallen in the city more than 50% of rainfall throughout the year."
They expect the application to be designed, they can incorporate these data and provide information to citizens to anticipate flooding problems that cause this type of weather.
Finally, José Villarejo Group R & D Systems Division and Electronic Engineering deals with improving the energy efficiency of municipal buildings and public lighting.
They have analyzed the possibility of moving to LED luminaries Paseo Alfonso XIII, estimating a savings of 23,000 euros per year.
Likewise, they work on optimizing the electricity bill for municipal buildings.
During the presentation, the Vice Chancellor of Campus and Sustainability of the UPCT, Marcos Ros, has stressed that the collaboration between the city and the UPCT is "pretty close" since the signing of the chair, meanwhile the director of the chair, Jose Perez, stressed that "this is a multidisciplinary chair with lines very applied research whose common meeting point: improve municipal infrastructure."
Finally, the mayor, Jose Lopez, has said that the work of researchers at the University "We're already getting some achievements"
The funding of the chair for 2016 is 103,500 euros.
Through it were announced 12 scholarships in total, 9 research initiation, and 3 specialization.
