Break the access road to the Moorish Castle to prevent depredations (27/04/2016)

Stones placed in the way of the Moorish Castle this morning impede access of vehicles to contribute to the conservation of this fortress, located in the Cerro de los Moros crowning the Los Mateos.

These elements prevent road traffic to the castle and act as a deterrent to prevent pillaging of the castle carrying stones, collaborating in conservation.

In order to determine the exact location of these deterrents, the general coordinator of Historical Heritage and Archaeology of City Hall, Carmen Berrocal, he visited the fort in the afternoon yesterday, Tuesday, April 26, accompanied by municipal technicians and archaeologists and an expert in heritage of the municipal company Casco Antiguo.

The visit was framed in the studies and work on heritage promoted by the municipal government, whose priority is the recovery and enhancement of Moorish Castle that is abandoned for decades to their fate.

The castle is municipally owned and declared of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Also, the overall strength was found, showing the current state of neglect and vandalism result of decades and landslides produced recently.

The Moorish Castle is a neo-classical eighteenth century building that was erected as a bastion of defense for the western entrance to the city through the Puerta de San José (now Bastarreche square) and the whole Antigones Barracks and Navy Hospital.
