The City Council launches a new campaign to control the population of gulls calling for the cooperation of citizens (21/04/2016)

The Department of Quality of Life, Health, Consumer Affairs and Environment of the City of Cartagena, which dirigeFrancisco Calderon has again launch the Campaign Control of the population of seagulls, active from 20 April to 30 June, its methodology as usual, supported by the good results of previous years, such as 2015, that the proliferation of more than 300 copies was avoided.

The goal, once again, is to control the colonization of the yellow-legged gull within the town of Cartagena.

For this builds on data collected since 2006 on nest sighting places, using the technique of egg descaste level (drilling thereof) that produces its disablement, without destroying the nests.

Moreover, in the last four seasons it has incorporated the use of a repellent product by spraying on areas nest and vicinity which, combined with the above measures, it is serving as a deterrent to not return to nest in the same spot, as shown by reports by the contractor pest control.

The cooperation of citizens will again be decisive, hence the Department has begun to spread this campaign through the municipal website and social networks.

Similarly, a mailshot will take place in the areas between the streets Queen Victoria and Paseo Alfonso XIII (both inclusive) and Santa Lucia station and Ssctor, which are showing the greatest number of nestings.

The idea is that all citizens who locate a nest, either on your roof or a neighbor building, communicate as soon as possible so that they can identify areas and act accordingly;

efficiency is greater than if carried out when the pups have already been born.

Notification of incidents by citizens can be made by phone by calling 968 128957 or by e-mail: controlplagas@ayto-cartagena.es or through the web: www.cartagena.es (SEE ELECTRÓNICA_Tramites_PLAGAS )

RESULTS OF CAMPAIGN 2015

In the previous campaign to control the population of gulls, 248 eggs were manipulated to prevent subsequent hatching, and 61 chicks were collected,

A total of 250 zones or points were reviewed, and the number of received notices was 37, representing a decrease from the previous year, when there were 66 notices, mainly due to the intensification of the campaign during nestings, ie neighbors who already know that has gone through your building, do not put the notice.

In this regard, special emphasis was placed on reviewing the nesting very early, nothing nest, to control the population with descaste eggs, although this meant that in nests where they already had pricked eggs, gulls reached remove eggs and put again, so we had to go over the points several times.

Equally notable increase in eggs, especially in the area of mountains.

From the data obtained, it can be concluded that the seagull population has experienced a trend of displacement or progressive retraction in favor of coastal areas, the result of pressure being exerted on the population in the urban area year after year.

In this campaign, as in the above, it should be noted the significant increase in the level descaste egg, the detriment of the capture of chicks.

MEASURES TO FOLLOW

Preventive measures and guidelines that citizens must continue to control the settlement of the population of gulls and avoid the effect claim are:

Do not throw food in parks, squares and gardens.

Efficient waste collection (schools, colleges,) school environment.

Do not feed them: both gulls and pigeons.

Close well RSU containers after use, especially near food markets and large shopping and leisure areas.

Where were observed nests in previous years, put obstacles, whenever possible, so they can not return to nest, or simply observe campaign season the new formation of the nest, thus alerting the services annual campaign to ensure a more prompt and effective action.

Also keep in mind that although it is a persistent bird, gulls generally tend to remember traumatic situations experienced before, so try to avoid live them again.
