UPCT researchers claim that the application of Turboexpanders in pipelines generate electricity without environmental impact (11/04/2016)

Energy efficiency is a matter of great concern to the doctor from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Ginés Delgado, who makes few years decided to put all their experience in practice to shape a doctoral thesis on the application of Turboexpanders to generation electricity.

The turboexpander is a technology that improves the energy efficiency of transport by taking advantage of pressure jumps before consumption of natural gas.

"As in nature flowing water of rivers and is used in hydroelectric plants, can harness energy from flowing through the pipes, instead of consuming valves pressure regulating gas," says the researcher.

He and his thesis director, Ana Nieto, explained that this technology has a multiplicative effect on a large scale that would provide solutions to the growing energy demand and solve the environmental consequences of their generation and transportation.

In this sense, they believe that the use of Turboexpanders serve to provide 2% of world electricity if successfully exploited this situation and would cease to emit 0.36% of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This is equipment to reduce pressure and generate electricity using different jumps that occur along the gas system.

"In Spain flowing through the pipeline an amount equivalent to a power plant of 300 MWh energy," says Nieto.

Worldwide natural gas accounts for 25% of all energy consumed and in a few years this figure will rise to 30%.

"We have calculated that flows generated internationally, can generate up to 300 TWh (Terawatios / hour) per year, if massively installed the turboexpander.

This is a little more energy than it consumes a country like Spain in a year "point.

Currently in Spain, this technology is poorly implemented, and which the company Enagas pioneering way recently installed in the plant that has in Barcelona and use energy to feed themselves.

Nevertheless, they committed to implement it in power plants and combined cycle which are installed in the Valley of tailings as they have the conditions and optimize synergies more investment compared to other industrial customers.

Ensure that at least 10 of the more than 50 cycles in Spain have the characteristics to capitalize on a couple of years investment they had to do (1MM € / MW).

"The rest of the fleet of power plants take 5 to 10 years to recover the investment with the current operating system."
