The regional government wants to declare of Cultural Interest (BIC) the image of the Virgen del Rosell de Cartagena, first patron saint of the city until 1723. The Decree will be the Governing Council on Wednesday for approval, he announced today the Minister of Culture and government spokesman, Noelia Arroyo.
The Minister today visited the church of Santa María de Gracia, in whose altar is size, with four saints carved by Francisco Salzillo.
Previously, the Virgen del Rosell received worship in the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.
The record for the declaration of a Cultural image of Marian began a year ago, at the request of the parish council of Santa María de Gracia, and the procedure for resolution of the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage last May opened .
The Minister of Culture said that "with the BIC statement maximum cultural protection for the image of the Virgen del Rosell, part of the vast and rich artistic and religious which has Murcia property is given, and from the government regional working to protect, conserve and enhance the value ".
The carving of the Virgin del Rosell is polychrome wood and round, and responds to the prototype of Marian carvings typical of the Middle Ages.
The Virgin is seated on a throne, holding a rose in her right hand and the baby Jesus on her lap, who bears the globe of the world.
It is an iconographic pattern often repeated in the Virgin de la Reconquista.
The original color is not retained, and the current is the product of successive repainting made during the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
The image of the Virgen del Rosell is dated between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, however, several researchers maintain disagreements over the exact time.
