| The university community will harvest around six thousand kilos of Merseguera grape, native to the Cartagena countryside, in mid-August | The Politécnica and Bodegas Luzón reinforce their collaboration with the agreement, signed today, so that the production of white wine made from Merseguera grapes produced by the UPCT, to recover and value this native variety of Cartagena, be bottled and marketed by the prestigious winery jumillana. The UPCT cultivates in its Tomás Ferro Agrifood Experimental Station the Merseguera grape vineyards with which the Tomás Ferro white wine is made, in whose production Bodegas Luzón has already collaborated for several years in advisory tasks.
From now on they will also be in charge of the bottling and marketing of the wine. The School of Agronomists of the Polytechnic expects to harvest around 6,000 kilograms of Merseguera grapes next month, with which some 4,500 bottles can be produced.
“The harvesting and pressing of the grapes will be carried out again, in mid-August, by members of the university community and their families, as well as students who will be able to see their participation in the harvest recognized with an academic credit”, explains the director of the School, Arantxa Aznar. The subsequent fermentation will take place in the tanks that the UPCT has on its agri-food farm and also in 500-liter barrels with which a special production of white wine will be made. Tomás Ferro white wine will be sold from December through the commercial channels of Bodegas Luzón, whose manager, Francisco Javier Martínez, and his winemaker, Vicente Micó, have attended the signing ceremony with the rector of the UPCT, Beatriz Miguel .
