[The City Council proposes urgent work to reduce dry land and avoid more sludge in the Mar Menor (06/02/2021)

| The work would be topping the sandbanks to facilitate the waves to lower them | The Cartagena City Council is going to request authorization from Costas to reduce the droughts that have proliferated in recent months off the beaches of the Mar Menor and that favor the appearance of mud by preventing the natural movement of water. These works, which would be carried out by the City Council itself, are proposed as "an emergency solution to the inaction of the Ministry of the Environment, which just over a year ago said it was looking for the system to remove the dry matter and that continues to do nothing" said the vice mayor and head of the Mar Menor commission, Noelia Arroyo. The works for which authorization or permission is going to be requested will be tasks carried out by hand to rake the emerged part of these accumulations of sand, topping them, to leave them at the level of the water sheet and to promote that the effect of the wave itself is the than scatter the sand. “We cannot eliminate the sandbanks within the sea, because that is a job that the law attributes to Costas, but neither can we stand still waiting for others to act, because the dry winter will bring mud in summer.

This proposal requires minimal action, but our technicians believe that it can help to recover part of the movement of the water in these areas.

We trust that the Coastal Demarcation will speed up the granting of authorizations because they know the problem well, ”said Arroyo. A field work will be carried out to identify and locate the “dry” ones that can be topped without affecting the Cymodocea nodosa meadow.

The main sludge areas will also be identified in order to propose localized actions for its elimination in the future.

Topping work will be very localized and with manual means. The City Council is still waiting for a legal report from the Ministry of Ecological Transition to clarify the contradictory statements that ministerial officials have made in recent months on the powers to remove dry and sludge.

The municipal government has requested that official clarification to have legal guarantees before directly addressing the works. The dry ones are accumulations of sand that emerge in front of the beach, stopping the movement of the sea and promoting the accumulation of algae that decompose generating mud.

The appearance of these sandbanks is occurring this winter in greater numbers than usual. Authorization is expected to be requested from the Demarcation of Coasts, which must in turn request a report from the DG for Natural Environment, within 10 days.
