| The cleaning is being carried out in Los Urrutias, and will soon be done in Los Nietos, Islas Menores and Playa Paraso | Mixed teams made up of brigades from the Autonomous Community and the Cartagena City Council have started this week a special campaign to clean the coastline of the southern Mar Menor beaches to proceed with the removal of the algae deposits that they have accumulated during recent wind storms. "Although the production of algae is continuous in that area, in winter the rate of growth slows.
However, the wind of the last weeks has accelerated the deposit of algae that must be removed to avoid decomposition.
¿½n and the generation of sludge ", as reported by the deputy mayor and head of the municipal commission of the Mar Menor, Noelia Arroyo. The works, which are being carried out by a score of workers dependent on the Mar Menor general direction and the Infrastructure Council, are focusing on the beaches of Punta Brava and Los Urrutias, which are the areas where the largest accumulations have occurred, although in the next few days they will continue along the entire coastline, such as Los Nietos, Islas Menores or Playa Paraso. The algae that have been deposited on the sandy areas that face the Mediterranean Sea will be left on the shore to protect the beaches from future storms, following the recommendations of the technicians.
These are algae deposits that, due to their quantity and characteristics, do not pose any health risks or discomfort due to decomposition and, nevertheless, reduce the effect of the sea on the sand in the event of strong winds again.
