The medium-term trend of unemployment in the Comarca de Cartagena continues to show the deterioration that began in March 2020 with the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

COEC expresses its concern about the increase in unemployment in the Campo de Cartagena region, which continues to show the deterioration that began in March 2020 with the start of the COVID-19 crisis, aggravated this month by restrictions on the economic activity, mainly in the hotel business, and due to mobility limitations. According to the regional employers' association, the tightening of restrictive measures to fight against the outbreaks of COVID-19 and the lack of consumer confidence in the current health and labor context, both factors due to the second wave of the coronavirus contributed to the rise unemployment in the region.
In fact, the percentage increases in unemployment in December 2020 contrast with the decreases in unemployment in previous years. A significant figure for COEC lies in the number of employment contracts signed in the Cartagena Region in December, with 21,902 contracts, 9.0% less than in November 2020 and 10.2% less than the same month of the previous year, December 2019.
It is worth highlighting the fact that the year-on-year drop in hiring has had a special impact on the services sector. The president of COEC, Ana Correa, expresses her concern about the effects that the foreseeable third wave of this pandemic may have on the economy of the region and the measures that both the regional and national governments may adopt that will show their impact on the battered labor market and will further increase the serious crisis suffered by the service sector, mainly commerce, hospitality and the entire tourism sector. “That is why it is necessary for the Government of Spain to adopt economic measures, aimed fundamentally at these economic sectors, to alleviate the serious crisis that threatens their subsistence and, with it, that of the jobs they hold.
It is also necessary to pay more attention to the self-employed, reducing or exempting contributions, as well as exempting taxes and fees, ”Correa said. UNSEASONALIZED DATA The number of registered unemployed in the Region increased by 698 people in December 2020 compared to November 2020, representing an increase of 2.1%.

By municipalities, seasonally adjusted unemployment rose in December, especially in San Javier (+ 4.5%).
Cartagena presents a rise slightly above 2%.
