The economic consequences of the pandemic have increased to 12,500 people served during 2020 by municipal Social Services; 26% of them, 3,150 people, had never asked for social assistance before.
Although the greatest efforts made by municipal employees occurred in the period of confinement and the weeks after to guarantee food and basic products, the work of Social Services continues to be intense and focuses on helping families who face expenses.
They have run out of resources, according to the Deputy Mayor and Head of Social Care, Noelia Arroyo. “Social workers have managed since confinement - a million and a half euros in extraordinary aid - to meet rent receipts, medical expenses or enrollment periods that families have not been able to meet who have been surprised by an ERTE or by the closure of their small business.
Our first objective is to help these families until they regain their source of income ”. Almost half of the resources of the Council during 2020 (46%) have been used to cover basic needs.
1,250 supermarket vouchers and access to a commissary have been provided to 1,250 families and direct food delivery has been made to 4,521. Most of the distribution was made through the social emergency device, through which more than 87 tons of food were delivered to 3,450 families. Municipal resources and the generosity of individuals and companies has raised the tons of food managed by the city council in collaboration with social entities to above 120. Arroyo has underlined the solidarity effort that has taken place in Cartagena during the pandemic.
“It has been exciting to see the response from all the social entities and their volunteers.
All have multiplied their efforts in very difficult conditions to accompany our elders, to house the homeless and to care for the most vulnerable people.
Cartagena has set an example of solidarity and that way of facing problems it gives hope to get ahead with strength as soon as the health situation changes ”.
