| In the vineyards of the UPCT, students in Viticulture have been trained for 20 years and they contribute to the recovery of the grape variety aut ctona | The School of Agricultural Engineers of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has produced for the first time a limited edition of 500 liters of sweet Merseguera wine, native to Campo de Cartagena.

The grape comes from the 2019 vintage and has matured in barrels for a year and a half. The harvest harvested last August in the vineyards of the experimental farm, located in La Palma, will produce 1,500 liters: 1.00 of the classic white 'Tom s Ferro' and 500 barrel-fermented, which will be ready in March ... The new sweet wine is light in color, with citrus, floral and anise aromas with notes of white fruit.

It has a graduation of 13 degrees of alcohol, is silky in the mouth, with a balanced sweetness that is enhanced more if it is drunk fresh, at 6 degrees Celsius, explains Arantxa Aznar, director of the ETSIA. To guarantee the quality of the wine from the UPCT vineyards, three companies advise the School of Agronomists throughout the production process: Bodegas Luz ny Agrifusa, from Grupo Fuertes, and Seipasa, which also provides ecological phytosanitary products. The production of 'Tom s Ferro' wine began twenty years ago and has contributed to the recovery of the native Merseguera grape strain.

The research project has resulted in training in Viticulture for each of the Agr nomos promotions.

At the same time, it has allowed to create this wine with a variety that is grown using controlled deficit irrigation technology, to achieve its maximum potential.
