It is the most important archaeological discovery of the last decade in our Region and, without a doubt, the beginning of a new tourist era in Pozo Estrecho, a well-known agricultural town in Campo de Cartagena, which has always stood out for its love of culture.
The remains of several Roman villas in the area are already known, especially one located in the area of ??La Loma, but according to archaeologist Luis Enrique de Miquel, current director of the Regional Archaeological Museum of Murcia, what was found in the Galilean town supposes a change in the archaeological chart of the Region. The discovery has been possible thanks to the works that the Cartagena City Council has undertaken to remodel the Calle Mayor de Pozo Estrecho in order to pedestrianize the area.
During the excavation process, in order to place the new sewer pipes, water network, electrical and communications network, the company's technicians discovered some ashlar stones that, in principle, they attributed to some old construction, perhaps from medieval times.
It is known of the existence of Pozo Estrecho at the time when the cattle of the Mesta came from the lands of Castilla and La Mancha until they reached the surroundings of the Monastery of San Gin s de la Jara.
The town became an obligatory stop for the cattle to drink and the travelers to rest in a place that, as its name indicates, had a well,as there were also in Pozo La Palma and Pozo Algar, old names of the well-known current towns. As the works have continued in recent days, the company's workers began to worry about the size of the walls that have been appearing.
Finally, when a couple of marble columns and magnificently preserved remains of mosaics and a polychrome wall appear, the company has stopped the work and has brought it to the attention of those responsible for Regional Heritage. The first hypothesis of the impressive find is the possibility of finding ourselves in front of one of the most important Roman villas of the Carthago Nova period, which is not surprising given the strategic situation of Pozo Estrecho, on the fertile shore of the current Rambla de El Albuj n, which then had a more constant flow, which was used with rafts and reservoirs.
If we add to this the famous “narrow” well of the town, we have an appropriate enclave for the establishment of a population around a village that used the area for agriculture and livestock. However, the archaeologist De Miquel, believes that there are indications that the remains are prior to Roman times, which could suggest the existence of the house that Asdr bal Barca himself had outside of the walls of the then Carthaginian city.
De Miquel has explained that even the well-known archaeologist Iv n Negueruela knows perfectly that the historian Polibio speaks of the palace of Asdr bal in Qart Hadast, but also of a magnificent mansion in the rural area, outside the walls of the New Carthago. For now, the discovery has revolutionized historians, archaeologists and all the parties of the Cartagena city council.
The mayor herself, Ana Bel n Castej n, has suspended her scheduled agenda for today and has stayed in her town, eager to show the world that Pozo Estrecho was always “The Court of the Campo de Cartagena”.
