| It begins from next December 24 where visitors will begin their guided tour with an introduction to traditions and customs of the Saturnalia festivities | On December 24, the family activity “Merry Christmas, Bona Saturnalia” begins at the Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena, where visitors will begin their guided tour with an introduction to the traditions and customs of the festivities of the Saturnalia.
In this visit, you will learn how the Romans celebrated the Saturnalia festivals that coincide in time with our Christmases. Saturnalia were celebrated in honor of Saturn, god of agriculture.
They began on December 17 with a festive public banquet (lectisternium) and, to the massive shout of "Io, Saturnalia", candles (cerei) were lit to celebrate the end of the darkest period of the year and the birth of the new period of light. These Roman festivals were celebrated with large banquets and it was traditional to make gifts such as: candles, clay figurines, sachets with nuts or even money.
The typical dessert eaten during these festivities was buns with honey, a "bean" was hidden inside.
The lucky person who had it in his bun was crowned "Princeps Saturnalicius", and the others had to obey his orders. Then there will be a tour of the Museum Rooms, where more details of the festivities will be discovered by Augustus himself, who was enthusiastic about giving the most diverse gifts on Saturnalia.
