| The UPCT recalls on International Volunteer Day what the pandemic has meant for solidarity activities and how volunteers have reinvented themselves | UPCT volunteers have not gone on vacation in any year.
And much less in a 2020 marked by the coronavirus pandemic.
Volunteers have reinvented themselves and in times of Covid they have developed their cooperation online.
Letters of solidarity to accompany those people admitted to a hospital and forced to spend days and days in a situation of unwanted loneliness, phone calls to the elderly, Alzheimer's patients and their families.
These are some of the tasks that the more than fifty students who have joined the initiatives of the University Volunteering Unit have done without leaving home. And the reward, for the volunteers, is the enriching experience of having time for others despite studying a technical career.
“You realize many things that you could not come to think of in your day, from the types of families that exist (more united or less) and how much people can come to resemble each other regardless of the age… ”This is the testimony of one of the volunteers, whose name is not disclosed to respect the privacy of young people. For another student involved in this virtual volunteering, he has learned “The moral is: enjoy everything you have, work your best to improve and never, never waste the opportunities that are offered to you, not everyone has them.” And the fact is that volunteering, even if done remotely, becomes an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment, adds “Magdalena Lorente”, the promoter and head of this activity at the UPCT. This is the new volunteering.
But not everything has been done remotely.
Also in person and "taking risks", more than 120 students altruistically collaborated to guarantee that the EBAU exams were carried out safely, "at a very delicate moment both due to Covid-19 and for coinciding with the time of their exams ”. According to data from the UPCT Volunteer Unit, some 2,800 people have already benefited from the actions carried out.
288 students have collaborated in the different actions, in addition to 3 people from PDI and 5 PAS from the university.
Various actions have been carried out in collaboration with the City Council and groups such as AFAL. Magda Lorente assures that despite Covid-19, the number of people who have participated in volunteer activities "has remained", although there have been activities that have had to be canceled or redefined due to the pandemic. Thank you, volunteers.
Your support has been a cornerstone during these months of pandemic ”, concludes Sergio Amat, the Vice-Rector for Students, Culture and Sports. Amat reminds that these activities, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, have great transformative power.
