| The jury of experts has chosen the proposal presented by the young architect Pedro Pitarch Alonso for the city to recover this central and emblematic space, whose works could begin in 2022 | The recovery of this property, promoted by the Ministry of Education and Culture, has a budget of 2,825,000 euros The rehabilitation and adaptation of the Central Cinema of Cartagena leads the final stretch of the process that will culminate in making this central and emblematic space available to citizens.
This morning the jury's ruling was known, which has chosen among the 29 proposals that participated in the ideas competition called by the Ministry of Education and Culture the one presented by Pedro Pitarch Alonso, a young architect from Madrid who, according to the jury, has a great projection in the world of architecture. In the selection process, the different aspects of the design presented have been valued and analyzed, both conceptually and materially, innovative character and creativity.
In second position has been the proposal of José María López Martínez, Murcian architect, professor at the UPCT; while the third was Guillermo Jiménez Granero, a Murcian architect trained at the UPCT.
The three proposals have been selected unanimously. The winning project will shape the Central Cinema so that it once again becomes the nerve center of culture and leisure in Cartagena.
The designed idea is characterized by its extraordinary detail and its meticulous approach, which leaves the spaces perfectly defined, both as a whole and in the different elements. The Minister of Education and Culture, Esperanza Moreno, assured that "the essence of this project is to return to Cartagena this emblematic space of the city, opening it to everyone as a new social and cultural meeting point, in a historic location in the urban center ". The action that will be carried out proposes resources such as the installation of a large horizontal roof in the building that facilitates public access, together with the incorporation of old spaces, which are modified and transformed for different activities, both individual and collective, in such a way as to offer a common framework for cinema, theater, social gathering, cultural exchange and dialogue. To generate this common framework, Pedro Pitarch Alonso's project places the terrace as the only element, articulator and backbone of the preliminary project, where an open square is recreated that extends towards the horizon and can house a summer cinema, which would have spectacular city ??views. The patrimonial protection of the facades and the interior decorations also stands out, and the original windows are recovered, which provide natural lighting to the large access atrium, generating a new composition that combines original elements and pre-existing elements. One can speak of a conservative typology with elements of innovation and experimentation.
One of these innovative elements is given by the new identity conferred on the stalls, with new technologies that can promote new theatrical possibilities Unique roof and facade Another differentiating element of the winning proposal is the emptying of structural elements of the annexed housing building, in order to maintain the facade and create a void that, once built, will take the form of an open and diaphanous space on the ground floor.
This new space will have a roof and will be screened by the openings of the old facade.
These will be, therefore, the two hallmarks of the new space: roof and facade. Likewise, a set of accesses, spaces and platforms at different levels are incorporated as public areas, which are related to semi-public areas and end up establishing the functional characteristics of the preliminary project together with the rest of the main elements. Esperanza Moreno, stressed that the project "manages to visualize the Central Cinema of Cartagena in a more avant-garde way, without thereby losing an iota of its hallmark, remaining its essence and respecting the memory that the city has of this space" . The chosen solution "will allow a building to be enjoyed as a welcoming space, also prepared to meet the functional diversity that favors the flexibility of cultural uses," he added. Once the winning idea is known, a period of six months is opened to draft the technical project and call the tender and award by the Community of the work, whose execution has a budget of 2,825,000 euros.
Thus, according to administrative deadlines, construction could begin in 2022. The winning proposal will receive a prize of 15,000 euros, while the second prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and the third prize amounts to 5,000 euros.
