Cartagena celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with its most personal manifesto (03/12/2020)

| People with disabilities, their families and entities show how they have experienced confinement and the pandemic through a video | The Cartagena City Council commemorates this Thursday, December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the presentation of a special manifesto that is different from the previous ones.

In a new format, through a video, various people with disabilities, their families and the entities that work with them show their day-to-day life and how they have experienced confinement.Thus, this year, the words are accompanied by images that show how the pandemic has affected and how it has changed the lives of this group, bringing their reality even closer to all Cartagena and Cartagena.The video, entitled 'People with disabilities in times of pandemic', can be viewed, downloaded and shared on social networks through YouTube and the Informayor page.The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, has chaired the virtual act to celebrate this day, in which the Vice Mayor and Councilor for Social Welfare, Noelia Arroyo; the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García; and Lucía Hernández and Enrique Bocos, Social Services technicians.The pandemic has forced everyone to adapt to the new situation, also to the programming of events for this day.

The mayor has acknowledged that "I am very sorry not to be able to have you close, as I would have liked, but the health situation recommends social distance and prudence, a lot of prudence."The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is commemorated with the aim of promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all areas of society, as well as raising awareness about their situation in all aspects of life."This day offers us the opportunity to continue promoting the need to break down barriers and open doors, in order to create a more just, supportive and inclusive Cartagena for all," stressed the mayor, who has encouraged Cartagena society to " eliminate all barriers that hinder the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in society ”.In turn, he recalled that "we must guarantee the meaningful participation of people with disabilities in processes that affect their rights and interests by creating an enabling environment."“People with disabilities, their families and the entities that work for them are the true protagonists of progress in improving living conditions.

In this journey, you will always have the support and coordination of the Cartagena City Council, from which we work daily to make Cartagena a more inclusive city, a city for everyone ”, Ana Belén Castejón stressed.DIFFERENT CELEBRATIONThe health crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to adapt this year's events to the new situation.

Thus, the Cartagena City Council, through the Department of Social Services, together with the entities of people with disabilities, has carried out several of the usual activities that are scheduled each year, but in virtual format or with reduced capacity, to guarantee the participant safety.On December 1, the award ceremony for the first 'Cartagena Inclusiva' Photography Contest was held, which took place during the months of October and November through Facebook.The deputy mayor and the councilor for Social Services were in charge of delivering the gift to the winner, little Ana, who was the protagonist of the winning photo, with the title 'The essential is invisible to the eyes', and who got 635 likes in the social network.In addition, on December 2, the first day 'Retina Cartagena.
