The global cruise industry meets in Madrid to address the new challenges and their adaptation to the new situation derived from the pandemic. The Port of Cartagena participates in 'International Cruise Summit', as sponsor of the event that takes place in Madrid on December 1 and 2.
It is a forum that brings together the most relevant international professionals from the cruise industry to discuss the outstanding tourism sector, at a time marked by the Covid-19 health crisis. The Business Development department of the Cartagena Port Authority continues to carry out intense commercial work through the different forums, congresses and events to promote Cartagena as a cruise destination.
The current circumstances have meant that the work has been adapted to virtual tools with promotional campaigns and permanent contact with shipping companies, tour operators and institutions, to continue to position the Port of Cartagena among the top ten cruise ports in Spain. In addition, the APC has implemented the Covid19 protocols to adapt infrastructures and services, and be prepared to receive cruise passengers when the competent Administrations authorize the docking of cruise ships in Spanish ports, which is currently only allowed in the Canary Islands.
For this, secure terminals have been guaranteed with protocols for both travelers and ground staff and, of course, for the citizens of Cartagena. The cruise ship sector, of great importance for the local economy of Cartagena, faces challenges and stereotypes that are debated throughout these two days that the Port Authority of Cartagena has not wanted to miss because it allows to publicize the port and the attractions that the city offers to attract visitors. During the two days, the head of the Business Development department, Fernando Muñoz, has attended several round tables and presentations that have debated the return of operations, the new strategies of cruise companies, excursions and destinations, new investments, the fleet modification and how to restore consumer confidence. More than 450 delegates from all over the world attend this meeting at the Meliá Castilla hotel in Madrid, 100 in-person delegates and 350 virtually, which event was attended by speakers from the senior management of cruise companies such as Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, Tom McAlpin, President and CEO of Virgin Voyages, Michael Thamm, CEO of Costa Group, Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises, Chris Theophilides, CEO of Celestyal Cruises or Peter Deer, CEO of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, among others.
