| "The solidarity of Cartagena and Cartagena is the best complement to municipal aid to combat the effects of Covid-19." Ana Belén Castejón, Mayor of Cartagena | The Covid-19 pandemic is already one of the most important crises in our recent history, both from a health, social or economic point of view.
No one could imagine, just a year ago, the challenges that we would have to face during 2020.In Cartagena, this tough situation has led us to see that in difficult times, we are capable of showing solidarity, supporting each other and prioritizing actions so that no one is left behind. We were pioneers, as a municipality, in the implementation of an emergency device in March, just a few days after the declaration of the State of Alarm, to help supply basic necessities to families in the municipality with the distribution of food and cleaning products, a device that was active for 80 days and then continued to help families affected by the crisis, managed since then by the various entities that had collaborated with the City Council.Municipal workers and volunteers from Civil Protection and from all areas of the Cartagena City Council collaborated in the device, together with the Food Bank, Cáritas, the Red Cross, the Good Samaritan and the Sena association.
They also counted on the solidarity of dozens of entities, groups and anonymous people who donated food and hygiene products to help help those most in need.A solidarity and organized device that made it possible to reach 11,800 people in Cartagena, guaranteeing the feeding of a weekly average of 1,000 residents, and which distributed more than 87 tons of food in those 80 days.In turn, numerous initiatives were launched to support sectors such as hospitality, commerce or tourism, and groups such as the long-term unemployed or entrepreneurs, and teleworking was facilitated since March for municipal workers so that citizens they could carry out all their procedures and procedures with the administration safely.
The Cartagena City Council did not stop its activity and its workers were able to continue providing their public service with all possible protections. At this time, coordination must be total among all so that no one is left behind.
For this reason, the Covid Network has been launched, in which the City Council, Health Area 2 and the Federation of Neighbors participate, with the aim of helping those who need it most and coordinating actions in the neighborhoods and county councils with greater incidence of cases.
In this way, this working group has already helped more than 39 families with economic difficulties to remain in quarantine and, in addition, works in neighborhoods such as San Antón or Peral to detect risk situations and disseminate information, with the intention of continuing to spread the network until reaching the entire municipality of Cartagena.More recently, and on the occasion of the closure of bars and restaurants throughout the Region of Murcia to contain the advance of the Coronavirus in recent weeks, the City Council has launched an office for direct attention to entrepreneurs and workers in the hospitality sector.Communication between hoteliers and the municipal government has been constant and fluid since the outbreak of the crisis last spring, but it has intensified in recent weeks to ensure that everyone can continue to lift the blind.
For this, the new office already offers information and streamlines procedures on aid to the hospitality industry that are being approved in the different administrations, while it has once again been exempted, as was approved last March, from the payment of invoices of water and garbage to closed establishments. In addition, the City Council has waived the payment for the terrace fee while the sanitary limitations last and next year no company will have to pay fees for opening businesses in Cartagena.
Support for SMEs is total from the first moment, to help all Cartagena entrepreneurs to continue creating employment and wealth in the municipality.Undoubtedly, all these actions would not be enough without counting on the solidarity of the people of Cartagena.
Both those who in full confinement risked their health and that of their own to help those most in need in the Social Emergency Device, as well as those who work in essential sectors and who have helped us during these months to make everything easier: health , State security forces and bodies, cashiers, transporters, hoteliers ...Also the entities and groups that collaborate altruistically with the most needy and, of course, each of the neighbors, who with personal sacrifice comply with the rules, maintain the safety distance, use the mask and have stopped seeing and hug many of your loved ones to protect your health. All, with responsibility and patience, will manage to end this pandemic.
Without a doubt, the solidarity of the people of Cartagena is the best complement to municipal aid to combat the effects of Covid-19.Of course, the aid and actions aimed at alleviating this crisis have not ended.
The Cartagena City Council continues to seek, every day, new forms of collaboration with social entities and any group that is suffering the effects of this pandemic to help them move forward and leave no one behind.Ana Belén Castejón Mayor of Cartagena
