Toys play a very prominent role in the socialization of boys and girls and represent very valuable tools for their cognitive and social development.
For this reason, the Department of Equality has promoted, for the fourth consecutive year, a new campaign of non-sexist toys under the title 'Educate in Equality.
Don't play with their future.
For non-sexist toys.
'This campaign aims to educate the public that there are no rules that make certain toys and colors those of girls or boys, since this only contributes to perpetuating gender stereotypes and roles.
Toys and games are objects to entertain and learn, cultivating imagination and creativity and with which to contribute to creating a space of equality and respect for diversity for all.“We must be aware of our responsibility as educators and participate in the choice of toys, knowing that in this way we contribute to their fun, but also to stimulate the learning and development of their personal, affective and social skills.
If girls were educated just like them in empowerment and autonomy and boys like them in the value of care and emotions, without conditioning them, there would probably be no real differences between men and women ”, has indicated the Councilor for the Equality area, David Martínez Noguera. The mayor explained that “it is more and more frequent to find commercial brands that begin to publish less sexist and more inclusive catalogs in the image, use of colors and also, the arrangement of toys in shop windows and stores is increasingly being cared for.
This is very positive because it is a way of representing the world and, with it, a more equal and inclusive space ”.From the Department of Equality it is recommended to show boys and girls catalogs that are egalitarian so that their choices are derived from their tastes and interests, dissociating them from the sexist message without forgetting that before buying a toy you must make sure that it has gone through a control of quality and age appropriate. The campaign reaches schools, nursery schools, OMITAS, health centers and toy stores.
Martínez Noguera has also stressed that "toys should be used for boys and girls to learn and always have fun from equality and freedom."
