Next year 2021, the Popular University of Cartagena (UP) celebrates the 40th anniversary of its new journey, the date on which different cultural events will be held to commemorate the trajectory of this municipal entity, which is listed as Cultural Heritage of the City , highlighting meetings, conferences, and workshops for the recovery of traditions and popular culture of the municipality of Cartagena.To launch this new cultural initiative, the UP convened last Thursday at the Casa del Folklore de La Palma, different groups and experts related to the traditions of the area, with the main objective of presenting its proposal called "The UP, Tradition and Popular Culture ”.

The idea is to involve all of them in the final drafting of a cultural proposal that, in the words of the Director of the Popular University, José Macían, "would not be possible without their collaboration."Among the experts invited to participate in this new cultural proposal of the UP, the Official Chronicler of Cartagena José Sánchez stands out, who will contribute his knowledge about the cultural and popular history of the municipality, highlighting “the important role of the recovery of our traditions applied in the modern world ”.The meeting was attended by representatives of the Folkloric Group "Ciudad de Cartagena" of La Palma, the Folk Group "Virgen de la Piedad" Molinos Marfagones, the groups of Tallante and La Aljorra, the Trovera Association "Jose María Marín", Choirs and Dances of Los Dolores and Isla Plana, and other groups from the Campo de Cartagena region such as Fuente Álamo, which stands out for its “bolero” dances.To all these invited groups, there are references and experts from the oldest trades in Cartagena such as esparto, bolillo or traditional games and sports such as bowling in Cartagena.Neither have they forgotten from the UP of the popular and traditional gastronomy of the municipality, inviting to these days of popular culture to neighbors who keep their most popular recipes in their knowledge; the Galilean balls; the michirones; scouts; the easter scrolls, etc.“We have few references left that can teach us all the popular knowledge, but we still have time to recover them and that the neighbors of our neighborhoods and our councils, in addition to the city, can train and enjoy it to feel part of a town that knew how to survive with esparto grass, and without plastic, ”said the councilor delegate of the Culture Area, Carlos Piñana.All those present cataloged the meeting as a "historical meeting" that will serve for groups, experts, and referents of the traditions of the municipality, to share their wishes to get the citizens of Cartagena to know and become passionate about popular culture , while working to achieve the generational change that ensures that these traditions are not lost in the oblivion of time.“90 years after Carmen Conde and Antonio Oliver founded the Popular University of Cartagena, we pick up the baton to recover those“ Pedagogical Missions ”that fought to defend our popular culture and our traditions.

We want to work in the city, in our neighborhoods and councils from the social and participatory thinking, putting in value our cultural heritage to achieve the feeling of belonging to the community in which we are born and live ”, concluded the councilor of the Culture Area , David Martínez Noguera.
