Outdoor exams in Architecture (17/11/2020)

The tradition of the School of Architecture and Building of teaching its first-year students to draw buildings in the open air has become a great advantage in times of pandemic. Today around 80 students have taken the Graphic Ideation subject in the courtyard of the CIM during the second day of midterm exams at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

The safety distance, the hydroalcoholic gel and the masks have been a constant.

"We have a greater sense of security examining ourselves outdoors," said student Ayad Dahhan."We have divided the subject between exercises in the urban classroom, with drawing outdoors but within the university campus given mobility restrictions, and another part of online teaching with tasks such as drawing from the interpretation of plans and sections", explains the person in charge of the subject, Pedro Jiménez.

This second part of the subject was also examined this morning in two of the largest classrooms on the CIM campus, in which less than half of the capacity was occupied to keep a safe distance."There was a free table between each student", describes Mohamed Chaid, one of the many students who has come from Morocco to study Architecture at the UPCT.

The internationalization of students is very broad in this career, despite the decrease in Erasmus students, and there are even two students who have come from China.

"I read about the UPCT in an article," Longtao Lin, from a town near Beijing, has commented on his election.

The cultural melting pot is completed with students residing in Spain but coming from Latin American countries and Eastern Europe."Safety distances are kept in the exams, but not everyone does it when they leave the building and you have to be aware of the risk that exists," Helen Tonato has indicated."We went in and out of the building in a row, avoiding crowding," said Salma Zambudio, for whom the exam was on schedule, "it was about what we had seen both in the online and in-person classes.""The telematic classes are very comfortable and you can see that the teacher is going at a slower pace and it is easier to understand it," said Mohamed Reda, who has also come from Morocco to study Architecture in Spain."The environment is very different this year," sums up Luis Baguay, who has started his degree in Architecture after a first year at Teleco.

"I approved everything but I discovered that it was not my vocation," he clarified.
