City Council and SODICAR recall the importance of health personnel on World Diabetes Day (14/11/2020)

| Under the slogan Nursing and Diabetes, this year the campaign focuses on promoting the role of nursing personnel, both in prevention, control, care, education and support for people who suffer from it | On World Diabetes Day, celebrated this Saturday, November 14, the Cartagena and Comarca Diabetes Society (SODICAR) has read a manifesto with the aim of raising awareness and giving visibility to the disease.Unlike other years, on this occasion the reading of the manifesto has not been made publicly to adapt to the health recommendations of the authorities.

The Deputy Mayor of Cartagena and head of the Social Services Area, Noelia Arroyo, accompanied the president of SODICAR, María Dolores García, during the reading at the City Hall.Under the slogan Nursing and Diabetes "this year the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on promoting the role of nursing staff, both in prevention, control, care, education and support for people who suffer from it", Noelia Arroyo has declared, who also recalled that "this recognition is even more necessary in the midst of the pandemic due to the effort, dedication, sacrifice and commitment of health workers."In the current circumstances, the proposed activities are through the internet, so this Saturday the X virtual march is held, the funds raised going to SODICAR and DiabetesCERO, for the investigation of the cure of type 1 diabetes."This year more than ever we must give visibility to diabetes at the same time that the collective, the administration and the health personnel are made aware of the only effective tool to maintain good control, which is therapeutic education in diabetes", he explained Maria Dolores Garcia.Among the data highlighted by the president of SODICAR, it is indicated that in Cartagena there are more than 30,000 people with diabetes, although about 13,000 do not know it, and in the Region of Murcia, more than 200,000, half undiagnosed.

According to data from the International Diabetes Federation, an estimated 463,000,000 people around the world, between the ages of 20 and 70, are currently living with diabetes, representing 9.3% of adults.

Likewise, there are 1,100,000 affected among children and adolescents.

Additionally, one in two adults is undiagnosed, which is 232,000,000 undiagnosed people.In 2010, a decade ago, diabetes was expected to reach a figure of 438,000,000 by 2025, and five years earlier this prediction has already been exceeded by 25,000,000 people. The manifesto also refers to the different types of diabetes, as well as the importance of controlling this disease, since "although it does not appear as a cause in death certificates, it is behind a significant number of deaths as it is a chronic disease which, without proper control, causes damage to organs such as the heart and eyes, "the president of the association pointed out.SODICAR has made the following claims for the group in the reading of the manifesto:Continuing education and training for both patients and healthcare personnelA multidisciplinary team made up of all the professionals involvedPrevention and early detention campaignsThat patient associations are part of decision-making together with the administrationHealth equity among all autonomous communitiesAccess to all treatments and the use of new technologiesAttention to individual needs and personalized treatmentsNormalization and non-discrimination of the child with diabetes at school, with the involvement of the entire school environmentNon-discrimination in employment and application of existing regulations for access to public employmentResearch support for the cure of type 1 diabetes
