| Socioeconomic Impact Study Irrigation in Campo de Cartagena | The activities related to irrigation in Campo de Cartagena account for 37% of the Gross Domestic Product of the region according to a study commissioned by the Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena. "The agricultural activity of Campo de Cartagena is a focus of attraction for national and foreign investment," says Alberto del Villar, professor of Economics at the University of Alcalá de Henares and co-author of the study. "Without irrigation, the socio-economic structure of the Region of Murcia would be seriously compromised," says Joaquín Melgarejo, professor of Economic Analysis at the University of Alicante and co-author of the study. The study shows how farms work to reduce the load of fertilizers and other phytosanitary products on crops. The irrigation of Campo de Cartagena generates a Gross Added Value of almost 2,800 million euros per year, 37% of the GDP of the region, and employs 47,400 full-time workers. The main conclusions of the research work 'Economic Assessment of agricultural activities in the Campo de Cartagena' written by Alberto del Villar García, Contracted Professor of the Department of Economics and Business Management of the University of Alcalá de Henares, Mª Inmaculada López Ortiz, Professor of the Department of Applied Economic Analysis of the University of Alicante and Joaquín Melgarejo Moreno, Professor of the Department of Applied Economic Analysis and the Director of the University Institute of Water and Environmental Sciences of the University of Alicante. The study has been commissioned by the Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena to the Institute of Water and Environmental Sciences (IUACA) of the University of Alicante with the aim of carrying out an evaluation of the socioeconomic impact of irrigation in Campo de Cartagena. For Professor Alberto Villar: "The activities of Campo de Cartagena have generated an economic ecosystem that is a focus for attracting national and foreign investment, which encourages the incorporation of highly qualified labor and attracts talent from abroad.
The incorporation of these workers and their families have generated cultural enrichment and the demand for new services.
Creating poles of economic development in the area.
An economy very open to foreign competition, whose products lead international markets.
" Professor Joaquín Melgarejo highlights, for his part: "Without the irrigation of Campo de Cartagena, the socioeconomic structure of the Region of Murcia would be seriously compromised, it would affect key sectors, such as exports of agro-industrial products, and a social crisis would occur similar in size to that of the 1980s of the last century ". Importance of R + D + i This research study also highlights the importance given to investment activity in R & D & i processes, which exceed the national average in dedicated resources and reflects the significant dynamism, which is unmatched in other part of the Spanish territory.
This has placed agriculture in Campo de Cartagena and the industries that revolve around it as one of the most competitive in the world. It also highlights that companies in the sector and farms are working to reduce the load of fertilizers and other products on crops with the dual objective of improving their efficiency and reducing their consumption. The study shows the interest and concern of the agricultural sector to make these activities sustainable over time, minimizing the impacts caused by the use of these types of products. The Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena is committed to improving its strategic planning processes and to adequately communicate the important socio-economic contribution of agricultural activity, in its continuous improvement from an environmental, social and economic point of view. This scientific research shows that the irrigation of Campo de Cartagena is an economic engine of the Region of Murcia, and "has the potential and capacity to continue being so".
