| Minister Miguel Motas sends a letter to the Minister of Universities in which he exposes the Executive's interest in not carrying out the closure announced a few weeks ago | About 1,000 students benefit each year from the courses taught by the UIMP, whose rating reaches 9 out of 10 The regional government has reiterated to the state government its interest in not closing the headquarters of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) in Cartagena, as well as its full support for the maintenance of the only headquarters of this institution in the Region of Murcia. After meeting with the representatives of the UIMP headquarters in Cartagena and requesting the participation of the Ministry of Employment, Research and Universities in the consortium that manages it, the Minister Miguel Motas sent a letter to the Minister of Universities, Manuel Castells, in the who expressed his disagreement with the announced closure. Motas highlighted the "impact of the presence of students from all over the world in a historic and important city of the Mediterranean Arc and its economic impact and the external promotion of Cartagena and the Region due to its synergies with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and its agreements with professional associations and numerous public and private institutions ".
He added that the UIMP "contributes to consolidate the cultural and academic agenda of a city in constant transformation." The counselor highlighted the "academic importance" of the headquarters, which teaches immersion courses in English throughout Spain, with an average of 1,000 students, scholarship holders from the Ministry, with an assessment that exceeds 9 out of 10 and with different Postgraduate courses , together with the organization and celebration of different international forums and conferences. Motas reminded the minister that the headquarters "is perfectly viable on an economic level, despite not having received from the central government the financing established for 20,000 euros per year during the last two years." For this reason, the counselor "does not explain the closure of the headquarters for economic reasons", and hopes that "it is not due to political reasons." In his reply, the minister assures that he is in contact with the rector of the UIMP "to find alternatives that prevent the closure of the Cartagena headquarters, a decision that is not firm, but only a possibility that we will try to reverse." The counselor trusts that, finally, the only headquarters that the UIMP has in the Region will be maintained in Cartagena and the initial intention will be revoked, which "would be a comparative offense with other autonomous communities that would maintain at least one, such as Andalusia, which, despite losing the one in Cádiz, he would still have the one in Seville ", he concluded.
