The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia has launched a Campaign aimed at reactivating the cut flower and ornamental sector, under the slogan 'In the Region of Murcia we have as many flowers as days to remember them.
' The councilor delegate of the Sustainable City and European Projects Area, Cristina Mora, attended this Thursday the presentation of the campaign in front of the gates of the City Hall of Cartagena, in which she stressed that "the City Council of Cartagena supports all sectors that are being so severely affected by this very hard and difficult crisis, and today in particular here is the Cartagena City Council supporting this campaign of the Ministry in favor of this sector that is being disadvantaged, such as that of the cut flower " .The objective of this initiative is to remember the great variety of flowers that are grown and marketed in the Region and to encourage citizens to visit cemeteries before and after the traditional days of All Saints and the Faithful Dead, on 1 and 2 of November, promoting the consumption of cut and ornamental flowers and helping to avoid crowds on designated days.
The mayor stated that the City Council encourages all citizens "appealing to the solidarity of Cartagena" to support this sector "with the daily purchase of cut flowers and ornamented flowers." The cut flower sector in the Region of Murcia is increasingly important, and it is grown for the most part in family farms and under plastic, although in the spring and summer months you can find outdoor crops.
The carnation accounts for about 50% of production, although gerbera, rose, chrysanthemum and bulbs such as gladiolus also stand out. There are around 150 to 200 farms with around 400 employees, with a turnover in spring of 6 million euros, out of a total of 17 million per year, which represents just over 5% of the agricultural sector in the Region.
At the national level, the Region of Murcia ranks fourth by province in terms of production. The campaign presentation ceremony was also attended by the general director of Agricultural, Livestock and Marine Production, Francisco Espejo.
