| The Cartagena City Council, along with others from the Region, participates in this initiative whose aim is to seek measures that allow the city to adapt to change climate | Reducing the use of cars and promoting walking, cycling and public transport are the main challenges aimed at reducing pollution posed by the Life Adaptate project, of which the Cartagena City Council is a beneficiary, and which now enters its last phase in which the protagonist is the citizen. Thus, by preparing a survey, which interested parties can access through this link, a pilot project ends with the aim of connecting green areas, with measures to adapt to climate change within the city. This initiative has been co-financed by the LIFE program of the European Union.
Remember that in 2018, the City of Cartagena adhered to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, with the commitment to carry out an action plan for climate and sustainable energy, which is currently in the process of being drawn up.In the case of Cartagena, the Life Adaptate pilot project consists of connecting green areas around the Plaza de Severo Ochoa, through landscaped pergolas that will create shady areas, earthen corridors under the shade of trees and planting trees and shrubs in the parking area and access to the EOI.In this way, there has been a pedestrian promenade with bike lanes, native trees and green roofs, which offer residents a friendly environment to walk and share. In other municipalities in the region, such as Águilas, a wooded area has been created with drip irrigation using water from a wastewater treatment plant to avoid wasting water.
In the municipality of Lorca, awnings have been installed in the crowded areas of the Old Town with shadow corridors. There are not only actions of the Life Adaptate Project in the Region of Murcia but also in three municipalities in Portugal and Latvia.
In the Latvian municipality of Smiltene, the goal is to recover the artificial lake 'Vidusezers'.
In the Portuguese municipalities of Mértola and Alfândenga da Fè, a natural lake and shady areas with renewable energy have been built to combat climate change.
