The drafting of the project begins to include the Victoria Cave in the tourist itineraries of Cartagena (12/10/2020)

| The enhancement and musealization of this paleontological site will be carried out in 3 phases that include the improvement of accesses and security measures | The Archaeological Heritage area of ??the Cartagena City Council, headed by Mayor Ana Belén Castejón, has already begun the work to draft the project for the enhancement and tourist opening of the Victoria Cave.

The main objective of this project is to design the different actions necessary to include the Victoria Cave in the tourist itineraries of Cartagena, improving the current conditions of visit, adapting the actions to the new excavations and improving the current security and accessibility conditions."We are facing a true paleontological gem and we want everyone to be able to contemplate and enjoy the magnificent stories that it hides and that help us better understand what the environment around us was like some 900,000 years ago," said the mayor. The main areas for improvement to facilitate visits to this Pleistocene site are at the entrances through Sala Victoria 1 and Sala Victoria 2, so an essential part of the project is the cleanup and protection of the vertical slopes that they present.

They will be covered with a triple torsion mesh, preventing the possible detachment of rock fragments.“We seek to make the entrance to the cave more accessible and your visit as comfortable as possible.

In addition, the museum itinerary is also being designed that will make your tour even more attractive.

The uniqueness of the paleontological heritage that it houses makes it very special, if to this we add the mining heritage of galleries and exploitation chambers or the mineralogy that houses the cavermine, it makes it a unique and singular space within the underground heritage of all the Spanish Levante ”, Explained Castejón.The project that is being drafted also includes a health and safety plan, signed by a technical engineer from Minas Gerais specialized in underground adaptation works.

The execution period of this study is two months and its budget amounts to 8,500 euros. The Victoria Cave is located on the eastern slope of Cerro de San Ginés, where the Upper Paleolithic site is located, where industries, fauna and remains of cabins have been found.

Between the hermitages and the entrances of the cave there are various mining constructions in ruins, as well as aeration shafts and remains of dumps.

The two entrances to the cave that are in lower levels, were executed by the miners to extract manganese.
