Plan for sustainable mobility to work for the Navantia entrances (07/10/2020)

Adaptation of the pedestrian accesses, improvements in the access road and public transport, and even a communication with Navantia from Paseo de Alfonso XII are some of the proposals included in the 'Plan of Transport to Work.

Promotion of Urban Mobility in the Accesses to Navantia '.

The study is part of the 'Isaac Peral chair, created by Navantia and the UPCT in 2016.The study starts from an analysis of the current situation and examines the current accesses.

It has also surveyed almost 500 workers from the factory's staff and auxiliary industry.

The work proposes some measures aimed at improving the aforementioned accesses, reducing polluting emissions and integrating these accesses into the mobility of the city.Among the proposed measures, the adaptation of the pedestrian access at the foot of the Carlos III Wall is proposed, with more lighting, a change in the pavement and the elimination of parking lots. It also proposes the improvement of the La Algameca road and the promotion of the use of low-polluting transport, such as personal mobility vehicles, electric or not, such as bicycles and scooters.

This measure would be complemented with the installation of recharging points for electric vehicles in the company's outdoor car park, and the placement of a bicycle repair and maintenance point is even proposed. The plan also raises the possibility of creating a ferry line that would link Navantia with the Alfonso XII Dock by sea, a means of transport that was already used many years ago.

In addition, the implementation of teleworking or flexibility of schedules is suggested in those areas that may be viable within the company, among other additional measures. The document prepared analyzes the environmental cost of the proposals it includes and indicates that the reduction of trips and kilometers that will be made if they were carried out would mean a reduction of more than 231,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere per year.At the same time, a campaign has been launched to explain the Plan to local authorities, according to the director of the Chair, Diego Alcaraz, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing.

"The idea is that it be taken into account in the projects to adapt the accesses to the Christmas Lighthouse, La Algameca Road and the Espalmador area, which are being planned," adds the professor. The study was directed by Professor Pilar Jiménez Gomez, from the Department of Mining and Civil Engineering at the UPCT.

The students Stephany Beltrán Martínez and David María Dolores Espejo have participated in the work team. The study authors presented the plan electronically to the Navantia staff a few weeks ago, coinciding with the European Mobility Week.
