The scheduled activities of the Carnival will not be held in February 2021, as planned, due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19.
The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, the vice mayor, Noelia Arroyo, and the councilor for Celebrations, Juan Pedro Torralba, have held a meeting with the president of the Carnival Federation, Carmen Sánchez, the vice president, Eduardo Pignatelli and the secretary, María Jesús Garcerán, who have communicated their decision, as well as their intention to hold a small festival, once sanitary circumstances allow it.For its part, from the Carnival Federation they have raised the possibility of organizing alternative events later so that the carnival spirit remains alive throughout the year.
The Cartagena City Council has indicated that this option will be studied when the time comes and that everything will depend on how the pandemic evolves in the coming months."From the City Council we support the decision of the Federation and we want to show all our support and affection to the carnival family in this difficult moment," said the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.“In addition, both the City Council and the Carnival Federation continue to work side by side to achieve the Declaration of National Tourist Interest.
We still have a lot to do but neither the pandemic nor anything will take away our illusion, ”said the first mayor.“You know how I am and what it took me to make this decision, but we have to cheer up because Carnival is the joy of Cartagena.
From here I want to send a greeting to all the presidents of comparsas, chirigotas and choreography groups, with whom I will speak soon, ”explained the president of the Cartagena Carnival Federation, Carmen Sánchez. The organization of Carnival events and activities requires a lot of time and financial investments and, for this reason, the Cartagena Carnival Federation has wanted to make this decision several months in advance.
