| During the next months we will proceed to the cleaning and restoration of this piece that has been exhibited in the fortress since 2007 | The cannon of the Christmas Fort will undergo cleaning, conservation and restoration treatments over the next few months with which Cartagena Puerto de Culturas wants to return this piece of artillery to its original splendor. It is a firefighter cannon from the early nineteenth century located at the time on the wall of Carlos III in front of the Royal Hospital.
The Naval Museum gave it to the fort for its exhibition when the 19th century fortress was valued in 2007.The works will involve different phases, the first being cleaning, one of the most important in the restoration of a piece, on which depends its aesthetic appreciation, its historical and technological reading and, most importantly, the future stability of the barrel. In this phase, the paint and primer layers applied over the years will be removed by chemical and mechanical cleaning, a task that will be carried out in a controlled, gradual and selective manner. The next step will be the consolidation process.
To do this, resin will be used to seal cracks, thus giving it physical and structural cohesion in the most susceptible areas, and then carry out the process known as inhibition. Finally, one of the most important treatments for the restoration of metals will be applied, the application of a film or layer that allows to protect the barrel from external agents. As the mayor and president of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, Ana Belén Castejón, has indicated, "these works represent one more incentive in the visit to the Christmas Fort since the painstaking work carried out by a restorer will be seen live".
