| The building, located in Los Mateos, will be rehabilitated in the coming months, with a waterproof roof and the interior of the remodeled monument | The area of ??Archaeological Heritage of the City of Cartagena has resumed this week the rehabilitation works of the Molino de Las Piedras in Los Mateos, whose purpose is to complete the action inside the monument and its waterproofing with a flat roof, prior to the placement of the spire and other terminations of the works project. For the intervention, awarded to the company Marcaser SL, a scaffolding has already been placed that allows the work to be carried out with the maximum guarantees of safety.
The works will consist of the installation of the flat roof.
Once this installation is completed, the City Council will ask the General Directorate of Cultural Assets for authorization to place the spire, for which the necessary project is already being drawn up.As explained by the mayor and head of the Archaeological Heritage area, Ana Belén Castejón, “it is the last of the municipal-owned windmills whose restoration remains to be completed, after the works that have been carried out in the last years in the Molino del Monte Sacro, Molinete and Molino Zabala.
Our windmills are one of the hallmarks of the Cartagena countryside and preserving and enhancing them was a pending issue for this administration ”.The works have a term of execution of two months and a budget of around 30,000 euros and, "with the completion of these works the neighborhood of Los Mateos will recover one of its most emblematic elements," said Castejón.The Molino de las Piedras is located in the northern part of the neighborhood, on a rocky promontory in the eastern entrance to Cartagena.
This construction stands out for its great landscape value, since it visually connects with the Campo de Cartagena and the hills of La Fraila, Beaza and Ventura, while allowing us to contemplate the main castles around the city.
