This campaign, coordinated at the national level by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, aims to sensitize the population about the negative consequences of irrational use of the car in the city and the benefits of using more sustainable modes of transport .The presentation, this Thursday, September 17, of the event, which bears the slogan 'Cartagena moves around the planet', has been carried out by the councilor of the Public Roads Area, Juan Pedro Torralba, and the delegate mayor of Sustainable City, Cristina Blackberry."Cartagena moves around the planet and joins the European Mobility Week with this awareness campaign," stated Cristina Mora, who stressed that the objective of the campaign is to promote sustainable means of transport to minimize emissions of CO2.
Mora recalled that this year "the Covid-19 pandemic has made us see, even clearer if possible, how important it is to bet on sustainability and our environment."The theme chosen by the European Commission for this year's campaign is "For mobility without emissions".
In this sense, the councilor pointed out that it is "an ambitious goal to achieve a climate-neutral continent, that is to say, free of emissions," adding "the importance of raising awareness among cartels about the need to reduce the presence and occupation of the traffic in our cities.
" For his part, the councilor for the Public Safety and Public Roads Area, Juan Pedro Torralba, highlighted the importance of "promoting the use of public transport and reducing polluting emissions." CARTAGENA MOVES AROUND THE PLANETThe campaign has been launched with an "innovative contest" through social networks, specifically on instagram.The campaign consists of uploading images or videos of urban spaces in the city of Cartagena, using the hashtag #CartagenaSeMuevePorElPlaneta and the stickers corresponding to instagram stories to enter the draw for two electric scooters.ROAD SAFETY"Urban mobility is a complex issue that affects many areas," said the councilor for the Public Safety and Public Road Area, Juan Pedro Torralba.
The mayor explained that from the Councils responsible for the Area of ??Transport, Environment, Employment and Urban Planning, among others, "we collaborate with social organizations and companies to develop the widest possible approach to urban mobility.In this sense, from the Department of Safety and Public Roads "we have improved the road signs and we have installed more than 300 new signs in the municipality, specifically, the actions have focused on the repainting of the horizontal signs in more than 1,000 roads, including streets, crossings and highways and more than 100 kilometers of continuous lines, 21,000 square meters of pedestrian fences, 20 kilometers of parking lines and 15 kilometers of zig-zag lines have been marked out, "said the mayor.
In addition, as part of these repainting work, the mayor stressed that they will undertake the repainting and improvement of the signaling of the existing bike lanes.Within the global project to improve the municipal network of bike lanes, Torralba stated that the Department is working to remove this year the new bike lane in Calla Esparta, with a length of about 400 meters.
In order not to harm drivers "we are going to create new car parks on Pérez Espejo street, on the left side of Esparta street," the councilor pointed out.The budget for this project amounts to 150,000 euros with an execution period of 3 months.
"These measures complement others already in place, such as the closure of traffic in the urban center of the city," Torralba stressed.On the other hand, the mayor recalled that they continue with the project to adapt pedestrian crossings near schools, with the aim that children with autism spectrum disorder can cross safely, thanks to the incorporation of four pictograms with the signs: "Stop, look, cross and car stopped."
