| Experts, administrations, social groups and the public will be consulted in order to develop the urban project in this area that is most appropriate to the needs of the municipality | The Cartagena City Council has contracted with the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) a study that analyzes in detail how Cartagena society wants the Plaza de la Merced to be renewed. As explained by the mayor and head of Archaeological Heritage, Ana Belén Castejón, “the renovation of this space is something highly demanded by the residents of the area and we consider it a duty to have their opinion when preparing the project.
The intention of this Government is that the remodeling combines the protection and enhancement of the archaeological remains of the Decumano Máximo, with the use and enjoyment of this square ”.The study, whose contract was awarded to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena last Monday, August 17, has amounted to 10,769 euros and is scheduled to last 8 months.
It is a process of citizen participation with the aim of responding to the historical and patrimonial circumstances of the place, as well as to contemporary social and urban needs and, for this, the opinion of municipal technicians, experts in the matter, social groups in the area, as well as citizens themselves. This study, which will define the conceptual architectural bases, constitutes the previous step to launch the architecture competition where the urban project that could be executed in the future will be chosen. The team of researchers is led by Jaume Blancafort and Patricia Reus from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), who make up a capable, solvent team with previous and recognized experience in this type of research and process.Among the institutions to be consulted are the Regional Museum of Modern Art, Cáritas, Colegio Patronato del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, Orpea Residence, Royal Canonical Association of Christ of Mercy, ONCE, UPCT Student House, Schools of La Milagrosa, La Huertecica Collective, Department of Social Services, La Milagrosa Children's School, the Aguirre Palace or the Federation of Neighborhood Associations.Likewise, in order to obtain the largest possible sample of opinions, citizen surveys will be carried out, either in person or online.
