Students, professors, researchers, administration personnel of the university community have participated this morning in the Harvest festival of the School of Agronomists of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) makes his wine Tomás Ferro.They have harvested 3,000 kilos of Merseguera grapes, with which, starting tomorrow, Tuesday, 1,600 liters of wine will be made, of which 400 will be fermented in barrels, says the director of the UPCT School of Agronomists, Arantxa Aznar.
At the harvest, each year, students and teachers from all the centers meet again.This year, the number of 'grape pickers' has been limited to 40, due to the restrictions set by the coronavirus pandemic.
The School of Agronomists has planted the Tomás Ferro farm one hectare of Merseguera grape, native to the Cartagena countryside.The UPCT launched a recovery project for this variety almost 20 years ago.
In recent years, more than 6,000 kilos of grapes have been collected, with which around 3,000 liters of white wine have been bottled.This year, the collection has been limited to 3,000 kilos, also as a result of covid-19.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, the winemaking will begin in the winery owned by the UPCT, which is located on the Tomás Ferro estate.
After the racking and fermentation processes, the wine will rest until bottling in December.
To guarantee the quality of the broth from the UPCT vineyards, three companies advise the School of Agronomists throughout the production process: Bodegas Luzón and Agrifusa, from Grupo Fuertes, and Seipasa, which also provides organic phytosanitary products.
