The UPCT will be the first Polytechnic in the country to offer an official master's degree in BIM Methodology (23/07/2020)

| The studies are taught in a blended modality from October | The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) is the first polytechnic in the country to teach an official master's degree in BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, a technological tool that is revolutionizing building and infrastructure management in Spain and in the world.

Virtual reality, digital layout are part of this constructive information model that, among other actions, integrates and centralizes geometric information, temporary planning, expected costs, environmental impact and maintenance of civil works in the same project.Classes for the new master's degree in BIM Methodology for the Development of Infrastructure Projects will begin in October.

It will be taught in blended learning, with a significant percentage of its content developed in computer practice classes.

During the 2020-2021 academic year, and in a new normal situation, the master will be taught remotely, mainly on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, reports Antonio Vigueras (EICIM), director of the School of Civil Engineering and UPCT Mines. The new master, of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is aimed at Civil Engineers, Public Works Engineers, Civil Engineers and Master of Civil Engineering students this first academic year 2020-2021.

The director of the EICIM adds that the admission, in future courses, of students from other degrees in Engineering and Architecture is planned. The full enrollment has a cost of 2,114 euros, the price set by the Autonomous Community for official master's studies. In the master, the student will be able to acquire competences for the use of new design tools, 3D modeling, management, virtual reality and augmented reality that can be applied in the development of infrastructure projects (buildings, facilities, roads, railways, bridges, works hydraulics) in a collaborative environment.Vigueras highlights that companies in the construction and architecture sector are demanding professionals trained in BIM.

In short, it will be mandatory to use this methodology for the works that the Administration is bidding for, so “the demand will be greater.

In fact, there are already companies that only hire engineers with this type of training to fill their jobs ». The European Union and the different Member States are promoting this transformation, and dragging companies in the sector in that direction.

This methodology allows a more efficient use of resources, sustainability in buildings and the reduction of their environmental impact, says Vigueras. The BIM work methodology allows the comprehensive management of construction projects, in all its phases and during the entire life cycle of the building, through virtual models and in a collaborative way between the different agents involved. The National Quality Assessment Agency (ANECA) issued the favorable report of this new title on July 3.

The School of Roads and Mines awaits the approval of the Autonomous Community for the implementation of the new master.

"This achievement has been the result of intense work developed to offer our students the opportunity to acquire the skills they need in this technology," says the director of the Center. The UPCT taught this course, which now finishes its own title of University Specialist in BIM Methodology in Civil Engineering.

Last September more than 40 engineers and architects remained on the waiting list.Registration open from todayThe UPCT School of Roads and Mines also premieres the next year the Master in Mining Engineering.

The other new postgraduate course in the Polytechnic offer for the next course will be Industry 4.0.From today until Thursday, July 30, the registration period for the master's degrees at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), specialized in Engineering, Architecture and Business, is open. The UPCT offers master's degrees that enable to practice regulated professions of engineer or architect in all its schools and another twenty of professional specialization masters. The employability data of UPCT graduates show the high demand for graduates of the Cartagena Polytechnic in the labor market.

The labor insertion a year of holder is 91% among those who complete master's degrees, according to the latest Accountability Report.
