| The works, with a term of execution of three months, include the restoration of the exterior walls, the sculptures that flank it and the perimeter fence | The restoration work of the Pantheon of the Pedreño and Deu family begins in the coming days.
This week the contract has already been signed that will allow the rehabilitation and restoration of the mausoleum, property of the Cartagena City Council and located in the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios cemetery.The pantheon, built in 1872, is located on the left bank of the central boulevard of the churchyard, inspired by the one owned by the Boode family in the Parisian cemetery of Pere Lachaise.Both the exterior walls and the sculptures that flank it, which represent the three theological graces (Faith, Hope and Charity) are built in limestone, a very porous natural material that has been deteriorated due to the passage of time, the breeze of the sea ??and pollution.Thus, the work will consist of the rehabilitation of the exterior walls, the crowns and the oculi that finish off the building, which require a repair that allows them to be valued and prevent wild animals, such as pigeons, from entering the interior.
At the same time, the three sculptures will be restored, the natural stone columns of the access portico and the natural stone ashlar wall, as well as the roofs, will be repaired.In addition, the works include the rehabilitation of all the artistic mesh that surrounds the pantheon, which have suffered the consequences of humidity.The rehabilitation project will be carried out by the company Marcaser, with a budget of 37,000 euros, while the restoration of the sculptures will be carried out by the restorer Roxana Hernansáez, for the amount of 8,000 euros.The works, which will begin predictably next week and have an execution period of three months, are approved by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Autonomous Community and will have the collaboration of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, through the School of Architecture.
Thus, the direction of the work will be borne by the doctor of architecture, specialist in Funeral Architecture, María José Muñoz Mora, and the technical manager for the Cartagena City Council will be the architect, Ángel Alcaraz.“The Pedreño Pantheon is one of the architectural jewels of the Cemetery of Los Remedios and required extensive rehabilitation work to put it into value.
