The City Council reinforces the cleaning and removal of algae in the Mar Menor with 16 contracted emergency workers (18/06/2020)

| 130 workers assigned to the beach areas will rise to 130, who will work under the supervision of a specialized biologist.

The works will be valued at about 85,000 euros | The City Council of Cartagena will reinforce the cleaning and removal of algae on the beaches of the southern Mar Menor by contracting, through the emergency procedure, a service of 16 operators who will work in the area for a month and will increase the number of workers assigned to 130 the beach areas as announced by the deputy mayor, Noelia Arroyo, after the meeting of the Municipal Commission of the Mar Menor. The teams will work under the supervision of a specialized biologist who will ensure that the cleaning procedures comply with environmental requirements at all times.

In this way, the work of the brigades that the Autonomous Community has allocated in an extraordinary way to the beaches most affected by the presence of biomass will continue, as reported by the Deputy Mayor. The works valued at about 85,000 euros, will continue with the next hiring of new teams that will remain on the beach until the end of the summer season.

Arroyo has pointed out that “the dry ones that continue without retreating make the algae accumulate, but this year the algae grow faster and decompose in hours next to the shore.

So we have had to adapt the response and the cleaning methods ”.Likewise, the Deputy Mayor has reiterated that these extraordinary efforts "are aimed at improving bathing conditions, but we know that they are only palliative measures and that the structural problems of the Mar Menor need structural solutions that are only possible with a great agreement in which we participate everybody".The new brigades will join the reinforcements that the City Council has assigned to the beaches, with 70 workers from the cleaning contracts, 22 from the brigades and 22 workers assigned to maintenance in the coastal area through an agreement with the SEF.

In total there will be about 130 operators in cleaning and maintenance of the beach areas. The accumulated plant biomass will be manually removed using rakes and tridents to avoid damaging the bottoms, it will be evacuated in small vehicles for deposit in containers, and it will be transferred to authorized managers for this type of waste. As for maintenance work, municipal operators have intensified gardening work during these weeks, in Los Nietos, Cabo de Palos and La Manga, where they have also reinforced the cleaning of roads in the Las Triolas, Las Salinas area.

Marchamalo and Calaflores.
