Last Friday a huge branch of ficus fell in the Plaza de España.
The councilor of MC Cartagena, María José Soler, has warned about the important problem that poses for security since "the fall of one of these branches on a pedestrian or vehicle can have irreparable consequences." "Due to their size, these trees require constant monitoring and maintenance.
In addition, despite or precisely due to the rainy spring that we have had, some of these trees are in a precarious state with the naked eye," said Soler. It is worth mentioning that many of these trees are found in the surroundings of the Muralla del Mar, Plaza de España, Parque Torres or Plaza San Francisco, all of them crowded places and, therefore, at risk. For this reason, the Cartagena councilor has advanced that "we will urge the Government to pay greater attention to its vital state, being suitable to have sensors for permanent data collection, which allows having sufficient information to predict stress situations of the tree and minimize risks, with the consequent increase in its security levels.
