The mayor asks for a Social Fund for municipalities with more than 200,000 inhabitants (08/05/2020)

| The president of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia (FMRM), Dolores Muñoz, was interested this Thursday during a meeting about the situation in Cartagena given its particular idiosyncrasy | The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, considers it necessary to create a Special Fund for Aid for municipalities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, and so it was passed on to the president and general secretary of the Federation of Municipalities of the Region of Murcia ( FMRM), Dolores Muñoz and Manuel Pato, during the meeting they held this Thursday, May 7 by videoconference. The Fund should take into account per capita income and the poverty rate; the number of ICU beds per inhabitant and the impact of the Covid-19 in the tourism sector, with special consideration for the kilometers of coastline that must be adapted.

“Spain has 29 municipalities with more than 200,000 inhabitants.

Our needs are not the same as those of the smaller municipalities, we need more support and more financing, and that Fund would be the solution for us to face this serious economic and social crisis.

The City Councils are giving aid, taking funds from where we do not have and mortgaging ourselves, but we need support and, above all, financing, "said Castejón.In this same sense, the mayor has reminded the FMRM president of the need for the Government to allow municipalities to dispose of the surplus.

“In the case of Cartagena we are talking about four million euros that we plan to allocate to those who need it most; to families at risk of exclusion and to the self-employed, entrepreneurs and small businesses that can lose everything in this serious economic crisis.

For our part, the Government can rest assured that we are not going to use this money for financially sustainable investments, but rather to help our neighbors overcome this terrible crisis, ”said Ana Belén Castejón.

The mayor thanked the president for her interest in Cartagena and her particular idiosyncrasy, also asked that more information be offered to the municipalities during the different stages of de-escalation to avoid uncertainties.

"The royal decrees come out on Sunday and the measures are applied on Monday, so we hardly have time to adapt.

We need the Federation of Municipalities or the Government itself to offer us the information before we can prepare, "he explained.
