These days we have been informed, by the local press and the municipal website, of the negotiation and the possibility of transfer, by Defense, of the former Naval Hospital to the City Council of our City.

We applaud and support, if it finally comes to fruition, this first step undertaken in compliance with the approval, almost unanimously, of the motion of Unidas Podemos at the request of Yay @ flutes Cartagena in the plenary session of February 27, regarding the cession of the old Naval Hospital and its change of use for a PUBLIC Residence for the Elderly, Day Center and Geriatric Clinic, very necessary in our Region to alleviate the enormous waiting list and the more than overwhelming situation of many of our seniors and their families.Last September, another motion of the Cartagena Citizen Movement, coinciding with the demands of Yay @ fluutas Cartagena, was also approved, this time unanimously, so that the Municipal Government Team urged the Regional Government to increase the budget in the Unit, to regulate the announcement of subsidies for Residential Centers and to reinforce the public management of the Dependency system, prioritizing the public ownership of social resources and of the Nursing Homes.

Unfortunately, the Regional Government has only yielded to the pressures of large companies and vulture funds, by increasing the price of each contracted place that we pay between TOD @ S to the concerted centers, without increasing, in exchange, the quality requirements in the service, as expected.We hope and wish the cession of the old Naval Hospital and the change for the public use already mentioned, because we understand that it would be an unbeatable option given its location, its type of construction, the gardens for the recreation of residents, parking for visitors and ambulances, the necessary reforms that would optimize the cost compared to the same places that would be obtained in a new construction, the extremely important number of places that would quickly amortize the investment and cost more than the maintenance, etc.

And not only for the citizens of Cartagena and Comarca, but also for areas of influence.Because in Cartagena there is a waiting list in the Unit of about 2,000 people, and a deficit of more than 750 places for Nursing Homes.

And if we look around us, we do not have close solutions either: the ratio of residential places in the Region of Murcia is 1.43%, the lowest in the State with an average of 4.3%, while the World Health Organization recommends 5%.The Yay @ flutes Cartagena will continue to fight to solve this serious problem, offering to contribute ideas and solutions as first-hand connoisseurs of the problems of Dependency and Nursing Homes, whose private management formulas have been demonstrated in this pandemic as terrifying, revealing as very necessary the change to public management, with greater and more demanding control and new and updated legislation.
