The works of the new student residence at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) will generate more than 100 direct jobs and many others indirectly.According to data provided by Ignacio Baselga, CEO of the company, MiCampus, the company awarded the exploitation, plans to invest more than 9.5 million euros in 2021 in these works.

For the execution of the comprehensive reform, which will take place over a year and a half, Balsega has announced that it will use local suppliers.

MiCampus and the University plan that the works will begin in a few weeks, once the corresponding building license has been obtained, presented in the month of March at the Cartagena City Council.

Baselga indicates that the company expects the work to be completed in the summer of 2021 and announces that subcontracting of labor and local suppliers has been required in the negotiation with the construction companies.

The University and MiCampus are working to open the residence hall in the 2021-2022 academic year, says UPCT manager Isidro Ibarra."The idea is to start the works before the summer, as long as you have the license in order to fulfill the obligations contracted with the Regional Assembly to deliver the Alberto Colao Residence building as soon as possible," he adds.

  The new residence, located in the old administrative building of the Cartagena City Hall on Sor Francisca Armendáriz street, will accommodate up to 270 students.The rooms will have a minimum area of ??15 square meters with an individual bathroom.

They will have a table, chair and lamp so that the user can study in his room.The facilities, located next to the Rectorate, will have a cafeteria-dining room with service from Monday to Sunday, study and group work rooms, as well as leisure and games rooms and a gym.

They will also have a 24-hour concierge and surveillance service and weekly cleaning of all rooms.The entire residence will have a powerful wifi service.

The preferred users of the residence, located next to the Rectorate building and Campus, will be the students and other members of the UPCT university community.

Currently, the UPCT has two residences: Alberto Colao and Calle Caballero.The UPCT and the Regional Assembly agreed last December to extend the stay of the University in the Alberto Colao residence until December 31, 2022, while the works of the new residence are being carried out.The autonomous parliament has owned this building since 2008.My Campus Residences, a company with more than 20 years of experience and one of the main operators in the sector, currently manages seven residences with more than 2,000 beds in Malaga, Valencia, Seville, Aranjuez, Burgos and Logroño, a figure that it estimates to double with the opening of its new facilities in Barcelona, ??Bilbao, Santander, Madrid, Alicante, Oviedo and Cartagena.

The company obtained the award of the exploitation for 40 years of the future residence of the UPCT last January in exchange for the reform of the building and its exploitation for a service considered necessary in the municipality.
