| La Huertecica and Acción Familiar advise young people and families to treat the most vulnerable groups | The Cartagena City Council has launched an information and recommendations campaign aimed at young people, adults and families, to combat the risk of an increase in pathological gambling due to the increased consumption of online gambling and betting that has occurred during the confinement forced by the pandemic.“Specialists are warning of an increase in the consumption of online games, video games, compulsive shopping and Internet gaming during these weeks of confinement.

Although sports betting has been reduced, other types of games such as casino or online poker have increased.

Non-responsible consumption of gambling is a risk for everyone and, above all, for young people who have previously played in person, ”explained Deputy Mayor Noelia Arroyo, head of the Social Care area.The campaign, developed from the Municipal Plan of Addictions with the impulse of the Department of Youth, and the participation of La Huertecica and Acción Familiar, contains guides and videos with recommendations that will be disseminated from the web and municipal social networks.

These materials are aimed at young people as well as adults and families with adolescent minors to help them make responsible use of the screens and warn them about the risks that addictions to video games, gambling and social networks pose to young people.Both La Huertecica and Acción Familiar make their services and experience available to young people and family members who need information and guidance related to these behaviors, which are aggravated in the current situation of confinement.

Experts warn that home isolation, loneliness, excess free time or job uncertainty can lead to situations of irritability or anxiety that increase vulnerability exposure to the risks of gambling that is easily accessible through the internet.ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR MINORS AND THEIR FAMILIES Due to the state of alarm, the attention and monitoring of both minors and their parents or guardians is carried out over the phone.

Individualized attention is paid to the demands for information, guidance, training and mediation for adolescents / young people and their families in the field of prevention.The prevention program is aimed at families with adolescents and young children between the ages of 12 and 18, with initial drug use or other addictive behaviors.

The program can be accessed through coordination with Social Services of the City of Cartagena, CSM of Cartagena, CEFIS or other associations, counselors of secondary schools or at a private level.
