Students, teachers and PAS from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) have joined the initiative of the City Council to speak on the phone with elderly people who feel lonely due to the coronavirus crisis.Several dozen young people have already started to accompany older people by telephone.
They will do so for the duration of the confinement.
The initiative is part of one of the actions of the Department of Social Services of the city of Cartagena aimed at alleviating the loneliness of our elders. The response has exceeded all expectations.
Between Good Friday, the day the UPCT broadcast it on its official information channels and Easter Sunday, the UPCT Volunteer and Disability Unit has answered more than a hundred telephone calls and answered a similar number of emails.
.
Magda Lorente, head of the Unit, has indicated that in addition to members of the university community, the call made by the UPCT to collaborate in this initiative has sparked the interest of many citizens, who have turned to the University to volunteer.Volunteers will speak to seniors at least four times a week.
Each conversation lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.
During the call, they share experiences, ask the person how they are, convey security and send messages of encouragement.
