"The damage is beginning to become visible," says the vicar, referring to the economic crisis that is expected to occur as a result of the expansion of the coronavirus.
The parish Caritas of this pastoral zone continue working and being "a sign of solidarity and commitment of the Church with the most disadvantaged", receiving phone calls from people who have not been working for a month and "have run out of resources, because they had just enough to get ahead.
" Given this new employment and economic situation, these families are being referred from Social Services for Cáritas to support them.In order to meet the needs of the most vulnerable, and following established security measures, the different parish Caritas continue to provide assistance, as is the case of the Santiago de la Ribera, in which vouchers are distributed to make purchases in supermarkets .
In addition, the Fuente Álamo and Torre Pacheco stores are still operating, where families in need can obtain the necessary food and hygiene products "for very little money." In Torre Pacheco, the Hogar del Transeúnte has also been opened to welcome homeless people, with ten places.
Also, from the diocese of Cartagena some spaces of this vicarage have been made available to the public authorities such as the Jesus Redentor spirituality house in Santiago de la Ribera or the seminary house in Los Urrutias.
